Tree Inventory Complete

 

Thanks to a great partnership between the Winona Woods Neighborhood Association, the Town of Irondequoit Conservation Board and SUNY Brockport. Our neighborhood Street Tree Inventory is complete!

Over 500 trees, their varieties, circumference and location have been logged in a GIS mapping system as a part of a course project by Bria Mastrogiovanni a student at SUNY Brockport. This information will help both us and the Town of Irondequoit Department of Public Works make informed choices about the management of our urban forest. Going forward this data will also aid the community in securing grants in order to replace overgrown and dangerous trees as well as infill gaps along the street.

 

In the table below, its easy to see that many of our trees are nearing the end of their lifespan and it is important that we think proactively about managing their replacement effectively as not to have sudden changes in the streetscape.

The other concern that the tree inventory data highlighted was the need to diversify the replant with trees of various varieties in order to insulate the area from a future pest or disease which could essentially wipe out our current canopy if it were to effect Norway or Silver Maples.

The neighborhood association in conjunction with the Conservation Board will be looking into new types of trees which are appropriate for street side planting in an effort to both diversify the varieties as well as choose trees less taxing on sidewalks, driveways and other infrastructure than the current Silver Maples.
